When Spanish conquistadors arrived at the Yucatán Peninsula in 1517 under Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, they met the Maya. The Spanish spoke Castilian; the locals spoke Yucatec Maya.
According to the story, when the Spaniards asked "Where are we?", the Maya replied tectetán. The Spanish heard "Yucatán", and the name stuck to one of the most significant geographies in the world.
The twist: tectetán wasn't a place. It simply meant "I do not understand you."
Every communicator should keep that story close. What you say and what your audience hears can be different things entirely, and sometimes the misunderstanding outlives the truth by five hundred years.
